Burwell sits on the south-east edge of the Fens, about 10 miles north-east of Cambridge, and it grew up around two separate centres rather than one. That is why the village has two conservation areas, one focused on High Street and the other on North Street. Roof work in those streets is not simply a case of matching a tile, because what goes back up and how it is detailed both matter. We cover the whole village, old houses and new. That means pitched roofs in pantile, slate and plain tile, ridges, verges and valleys, flat roofs over rear extensions and garages, guttering, fascias and soffits, lead flashings and chimney work. We get up and look at the roof properly before quoting, so you get a price for the work it actually needs rather than a guess made from the ground.
The old local bricks were made from gault clay, which produces the distinctive white or buff colour, with red brick used as a decorative detail. Stevens' Mill, the Grade II* listed windmill that forms part of Burwell Museum, was probably built about 1820. Swaffham Prior lies two miles south west of the village, and we take on work in Reach as well.
In North Street a number of the oldest houses are timber framed and thatched, 16th and 17th century, set gable end to the road with long ranges of outbuildings and barns running down the narrow plots. Brick and clunch are the two predominant walling materials, the clunch usually painted, rendered or lime washed. So thatch, tile and slate in one village, plus flat roofs on later extensions.
