Sible Hedingham once made bricks by the million. At their peak in 1900 the village brickworks employed around 500 people and were making about eight million bricks a year, and older again are the Roman bricks and tiles built into the walls of St Peter's Church. A village that made its own building materials tends to hang onto them, and the roofs here have been stripped, patched and re-covered over those old walls many times since. That is the work we do in Sible Hedingham: repairs that suit the roof already on the building rather than fighting it. Tiling and slating, ridges and verges, valleys, flashings around brick chimney stacks, and the guttering and fascias that keep water off walls that have stood a long time.
The A1017 runs through the middle of the village and connects Braintree to Haverhill, so we come in on a main road with a full van rather than picking through lanes. The village sits in the Colne Valley, 21.3 miles north of Chelmsford. Braintree District Council has designated two parts of the village as conservation areas, one covering Queen Street, Potter Street, part of Swan Street and Alderford Street, the other Rectory Road and Church Street.
The parish holds 123 listed buildings, 119 of them grade II and four grade II*. The listing entries repeatedly describe timber framed and plastered houses, several weatherboarded, and a thatched cottage, so a lot of the roof work is hand work rather than a quick strip and re-cover. The 193 homes built on the former Premdor factory site are the modern end of the stock.
