Fulbourn still has some forty properties standing from before 1800, most of them timber framed, and in the 1980s half of those were still thatched. Long straw thatch, steeply pitched plain tile and clay pantile roofs sit close together in the older part of the village, and each one asks for a different approach. We handle the tile and slate side of that work: slipped and cracked tiles, ridge and verge repairs, valleys, flashings, and full strip and re-covers with new felt and battens. Older roofs here often have soft or uneven timbers under the covering, so we take it back carefully and check rafters, wall plates and batten fixings before anything new goes on. Newer roofs get the same care, with fewer surprises underneath. Ask us and you will get a straight answer on patch or replace.
Fulbourn sits about five miles southeast of the centre of Cambridge. The parish church of St Vigor is built of fieldstone with a clay tile roof, so parts of the old village are working in materials most estates never see. Fulbourn Windmill is an octagonal smock mill with a brick base and wooden superstructure, its first brick laid in 1808. The High Street is reputed to be one of the shortest in the county, which is worth knowing before a lorry and a skip turn up.
Most of the modern village has spread westwards towards Cambridge since the 1960s, filling open ground with new estates and cul-de-sacs. Housing of that age usually means concrete interlocking tiles on shallow pitches, so the common jobs are rebedding ridges, sorting failed dry verges and renewing eaves felt. We also cover Cherry Hinton to the west and Great Wilbraham to the east.
